A spacer for insertion between the panes at the periphery of an insulating glazing panel contg. at least two spaced-apart panes, wherein the spacer is made from a polyolefin-based plastic and is metal-free. Pref. compsns. for fabricating the spacers are comprised of (A) 50-98 % HDPE or polypropylene, 2- 50 % inorganic fillers and reinforcing agents and opt. 1-5 % of a functionalised polyolefin or (B) 50-95 % HDPE or polypropylene, 5-40 % polyamide-6, 0-20 % of a functionalised polyolefin as compatibilising agent and opt. 2-50 % inorganic fillers and reinforcing agents. The compsn. may also contain stabilisers against thermooxidative deterioration. The adhesion of the materials may be improved by incorporating difunctional cpds. (not specified) or adhesion improvers based on titanates or zirconates, or by mechanical treatment of the surface. The gas tightness of the seals can be improved by applying a layer of EVOH, PVDC or a sputtered layer of YOz where Y = Si, Ti or Zr and z = 1-2, to at least one side of the spacer. The spacer may be in the form eg of a multilayer profile or laminate of different plastics.
