This invention provides a system for transporting and unloading steel railway sleepers (10). The system comprises at least one bolster (33, 34) mountable to a flat bed railway wagon (31, 32) and adapted to hold an array of parallel stacks of sleepers (37) transversely orientated with respect to the bolster (33); and an unloader (1) movable along the bolster and capable of removing at least one sleeper from a stack. The invention also provides a steel railway sleeper unloading apparatus (1) comprising conveyor (4) for ejecting a sleeper (10) delivered to the conveyor from the apparatus; opposed gripping members (11, 12) adjacent the conveyor and adapted for gripping each end of a sleeper presented thereto and delivering the sleeper to the conveyor; and an elevator (6) for elevating a stack of sleepers and successively presenting an individual sleeper to the gripping members (11, 12).
