To catch the cut paper or other material in a shredder, the cut strips are carried by a conveyor (3) from the cutting zone to a compressing station (7). The compressed strips are chopped (14) and caught in a container which can be emptied. Also claimed is an assembly with a guide (2) in the shredder (1) to carry the cut strips to a conveyor (3). The conveyor (3) leads to a compression unit (7) to compact the strip material. The outlet (12) of the compression unit (7) is linked to the entry funnel (13) of a chopping stage (14).
