Collapsible steering-column for motor vehicle

The steering column has a component (2b) which slides axially on the column and is fixed to the bodywork via an energy-absorbing distorting component (7). The sliding component works with a safety belt, whose energy-absorbing coiling mechanism locks on collision. A second energy-absorbing and distorting component (9) is supported at one side of the bodywork and is coupled at the other side to the sliding component. A coupling (13,14) at one side of the second component is released when the driver belts up. The coupling can support the component on the bodywork, while its release device is on the belt buckle, or can be operated by a Bowden (RTM) cable from the buckle. Alternatively there can be a switch actuated by the buckle and controlling a motor or solenoid.
