An array of image data 2 is separated into two dimensional spatial frequency sub bands by alternately applying vertical A', C' and horizontal B', D' filtering to the lowest frequency sub band output from the previous stage. The other sub bands are left unaltered. The combination of the sub bands is the complimentary process whereby the lowest 28 and next lowest 30 spatial frequency sub bands are combined using alternating ones of horizontal E', G' and vertical F', H' interpolation. The use of decimators (38, 44, Fig. 4) to effect low pass filtering avoids the need to increase the number of bits needed to represent each data value within these low pass bands. <IMAGE> |
