The device has a first component which is fixed to the bodywork of a motor vehicle, and a second component which can move relative to it and which is connected to a seat and a drive unit (16). The latter has a drive shaft (22) which works in combination with a rotating threaded spindle (26) via worm gearing (18). The spindle is held in a threaded sleeve (30) on the first component, and the gearing has a case (28) which is included in the drive path between the unit and the moving second component. The case is coordinated with a metallic supporting component (42) with a shoulder (50), which is associated with an opposing axial shoulder (54) on the spindle.
