PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the size of an internal combustion engine ignition device with a trouble diagnosing function by a method wherein an accident signal detected by the primary current of an ignition coil is outputted to an ignition signal wire at a timing at which an ignition signal is not inputted. SOLUTION: An ignition device for an internal combustion engine comprises a switching element 3 to pass and disconnect the primary current IC of an ignition coil 30 and induce a high voltage to the secondary side of the ignition coil 30; and a drive circuit 24 to control a switching element 3 by means of an ignition signal controlled by an engine control unit 1. The troubles of the ignition coil 30 and the switching element 3 are detected by the primary current IC of the ignition coil 30 and a detecting trouble signal is outputted to an ignition signal wire at a timing at which no ignition signal is inputted. This constitution provides an ignition device for an internal combustion engine with a trouble diagnosing circuit without increasing a connection terminal and reduces size and a cost.
