PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a fine metal iron powder for magnetic recording having high coercive force and suitable for magnetic recording tape by containing specific wt.% of cobalt, a rare earth metal, tungsten and iron. SOLUTION: The metal powder for magnetic recording contains cobalt by 5-40wt.%. When the content of cobalt is lower than 5wt.%, the effect for enhancing magnetic energy in the metal powder for magnetic recording is low and when the content of cobalt exceeds 40wt.%, antimagnetism, saturation magnetization, etc., deteriorate. The content of a rare earth metal is set in the range of 5-20wt.%. When it is lower than 5wt.%, the shape memory effect is low and when it exceeds 20wt.%, the rare earth metal serves as impurities causing deterioration of saturation magnetization. The rare earth element includes lanthanum, neodymium, cerium, praseodymium, etc. Tungsten enhances the coercive force especially when it is employed together with a rare earth element. This method produces a fine metal iron powder for magnetic recording having high coercive force. |
