Heated billets from a furnace 16 are fed by reversibib rollers 19 to a shear 10 which comprises a fixed apertured cutter 12 and a reciprocating apertured cutter 13, driven by an hydraulic cylinder 32. The length cut off, which is for use in an extrusion press is determined by a gauging stop 24 which is adjustable along a rack 26 and which incorporates a limit switch 28 to initiate the operation of the shear. Beyond the cutter 13 is a cradle formed by rollers 22 which support the cut-off material and which rises with the cutter 13 when the shear separates. The cut-off piece is ejected from the cutter 13 when it is in its raised position by a rock bar 35 which is operated by an hydraulic cylinder 38 through a rack 37 and a pinion 36. The cylinder 38 is controlled by a limit switch 39 which is actuated by the cutter 13 when it reaches its uppermost position. Servo-valve control mechanism returns the shear to its starting position.</p> |
