PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful for treating hypertension, asthma, etc., by subjecting a specific prochiral olefinic compound to an asymmetric epoxidation reaction using an iodosobenzonic acid compound as an oxidizing agent in the presence of a specific optically active manganese complex catalyst. SOLUTION: A prochiral olefinic compound of formula I [Z<1> , Z<2> are each H, cyano, nitro, a (protected) amino, a halogeno, a 1-4C alkyl, a 1-4C alkoxy, carboxy, etc.; Z<3> is H, a 1-4C alkyl, a 1-4C alkoxy, a (substituted) phenyl, etc.] is subjected to an asymmetic epoxidation reaction using an iodoso benzoic acid compound of formula III (W<1> -W<4> are each H, cyano, nitro, a halogen, a 1-12C alky, carboxy, etc.; M is H, a cation) as an antioxidizing agent in presence of an optically active manganese complex catalyst of formula II [R<1> -R<4> are each H, a 1-4C alkyl, a (substituted) phenyl, etc.;Y<1> -Y<3> are H, a 1-4C alkyl, a (substituted) phenyl, a (substituted) naphthyl, etc.; X<-> is an anion] to produce the objective optically active epoxy compound of formula IV. |
