PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cold cathode discharge lamp unit, a backlight and a liquid crystal display device using the unit, for which only a small installation space is needed and handling and assembling are easy. SOLUTION: A cold cathode discharge lamp unit is constructed in such a manner that a belt-like flat cable 20 elastically changed for its shape in a thickness direction is connected to at least one end of a long and thin cold cathode discharge lamp 1 and this flat cable 20 is arranged almost in parallel with the lamp 1. Since the cold cathode discharge lamp and the flat cable are connected in a unit and this unit maintains a fixed shape, handling is facilitated, fixing of the flat cable is facilitated when attached to equipment or the like, and since the thickness of the flat cable is thin, a large space is not necessary and an installing space is small.
