A method for pre-treating raw wood material (1) in order to remove terpenes and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) before drying involves the following steps of: (a) heating the wood with steam (4) at atmospheric pressure; (b) using pressurised steam (8) at 3-5 bar to treat the wood in order to remove essentially all of the terpenes and VOCs; and (c) placing the wood in an evaporation vessel (10) at atmospheric pressure so that some of the water arriving with the wood is evaporated off by reducing pressure in order to reduce wood moisture content before drying. - Also claimed is an apparatus for implementing the above a method, including a first vessel (2) for supplying steam which comes into contact with the wood as it flows through the vessel, a second pressurised and tightly sealed vessel (7) containing devices for supplying high pressure steam and removing steam contaminated with terpenes and VOCs, and an evaporation vessel. |
