A cartridge, e.g. of thermoplastics materials, for driving a piston in cattle-stunning appliances and bolt setting apparatus, comprises a cupshaped part 1, a cover 3, and an axial annular projection 12 dividing the cartridge into a chamber 7 for an impact-sensitive igniting charge 8 and a chamber 9 for a propellant charge 10, the cartridge having a larger diameter than height. The cover and/or cup-shaped part may be weakened in the region of the chamber 7 to permit penetration of a striker, or the cover may be integral with a striker 4. The striker may be connected to the cover through a predetermined breaking zone. The walls of the chamber 7 are weakened by longitudinal grooves to facilitate ignition of the propellant, and the end faces of the cover and cup-shaped part are weakened in the region of the chamber 10 to facilitate egress of the propellant gases. The cup-shaped part can also be formed with longitudinal weakening grooves. The sensitivity of the igniting charge can be increased by having a layer of glass powder at each end.</p> |
