The support mat for the seat cushion is mounted on a frame (7) which is supported on two sets of levers (11,14) with which the seat is moved up or down. the levers can be locked in position by a blocking mechanism. The levers comprises a set of front levers (14) and a set of rear levers (11) which can pivot about points on the seat frame and on the seat support rail. The weight of the average occupant is taken up by springs (17) which act on the rear set of levers. The seat is raised or lowered by adjusting the weight exerted on the seat e.g. by supporting weight from the steering wheel. The front end of the mat (6), which supports the seat cushion, is attached to the bottom side of a tube (27) which is positioned on the pivot axis of the front set of levers so that the weight off the occupant causes the mat to exert a torque on the tube and therefore the front levers, which will tend to raise the seat.
