It is known to use operating slides for connecting multi-contact plugs. The invention relates to an arrangement which ensures that the operating slide is secured in a pre-engagement position, the securing being released in one variant by the insertion of the second plug. A first electric plug (1) has an operating slide (2), where the operating slide is locked in the pre-engagement position. The locking system comprises a spring arm (6) on the first plug with an engagement lug (7). To release the operating slide by moving the spring arm (6), the matching second plug (3) is inserted into the first (1). During this insertion the pin (4) causes the spring arm (6) to move and the operating slide can be moved. The two matching plugs (1, 3) are fitted together by the insertion of the pin (4) into the guide slot (5) and subsequently actuating the operating slide (2). A special advantage is that, with the plugs disconnected, the operating slide can be openly carried in the first plug and that it is so fitted in the latter that it is impossible to lose it.
