A mechanism is provided for adjusting the height of the backrest (10) relati ve to a chair seat. The adjustment mechanism for releasably retaining the backrest (10) in a plurality of selected positions relative to a seat permit s the chair to be shipped in a "knocked down" condition and easily assembled b y the consumer. The adjustment mechanism includes a channel member (30) that i s secured to the backrest, and a support member (40) carried by the chair that is slidably received in the channel member (30) and rigidly locked in select ed positions. The support member (40) has vertically aligned rack teeth (72, 74 ) and the backrest has a movable catch (48) having pawls (52, 54) that are adapted to engage the rack teeth (72, 74). Movement of the catch (48) places the pawls (52, 54) into engagement with the rack teeth (72, 74) to prevent t he downward movement of the backrest (10) from a selected vertical position.</S DOAB>
