The instrument has a pointer (3) rotated in front of the dial (1) and behind a transparent protective plate (5). It is back lit by a source (6) via an endless transparent strip (7) having sections (8,9) of different colours between markings (14,15). The strip is wound in a single endless loop around rollers on parallel axes, one of which can be rotated either manually or by motor to vary the colour of light projected on to the back of the dial.
