A complex association of a calcium sugar phosphate and an inorganic calcium phosphate is prepared by addition of an appropriate base to an acidified aqueous solution comprising an inorganic phosphate anion and a sugar phosphate, the calcium cation being provided either by the base or by the acidified solution. Alternatively, mixture of a sugar, water and CaO, Ca(OH)2 or CaCO3 may be phosphenylated below 30 DEG C. with POCl3 and the complex recovered from the reaction mixture. Specified sugars in the examples are sucrose and glucose and other sugars mentioned are arabinose, xylose, fructose, galactose, lactose, maltose, raffinose and mixtures thereof.ALSO:Cariostatic compositions comprise a carrier and a complex association of a calcium sugar phosphate and an inorganic calcium p phosphate such that, when the total dissolved calcium sugar phosphate and calcium phosphate in an aqueous solution thereof exceeds 5% W/W, at least 2% by weight of the inorganic calcium phosphate based on the weight of calcium sugar phosphate is present in solution. Suitable forms include toothpastes, toothpowders, liquid (detergent type) dentifrices, tablets and lozenges. |
