Proposed is a process for decontaminating suspensions containing silt, pollutants and water, in particular suspensions containing mercury and/or hydrocarbons. In this process the suspension is heated (13) under pressure to boiling temperature and subsequently passed to a throttle device (141), the developing three-phase mixture of steam, residual water and solid matter then being passed to a tubular reactor (14), where it is superheated with additional input of energy, the pollutants being concentrated in the steam phase so that they can be extracted in liquid form by condensation (16) after the solids have been separated out (15).
