Photometric determn. of pancreatic phospholipase A2

A photometric test for measuring pancreatic phospholipase A2 activity in serum or plasma in order to differentiate between mild and severe (necrotising) cases of acute pancreatitis within 12 hr of the onset of the disease is claimed. The method is based on the fact that addn. of a lecithin soln. to an erythrocyte suspension, which serves as substrate for the pancreatic phospholipase A2, results in haemolysis of the erythrocytes by the lysolecithin formed. As the degree of haemolysis is directly proportional to the pancreatic phospholipase A2 concn. and the incubation time, this concn. can be calculated. by photometric measurement of the degree of haemolysis.
