Gear selector system for vehicle

The separate forward gears (G1-G6) and the one reverse gear (R) are set by the position of a switching rotor (35) and by selector clutches (21,22,23) and selector forks (24,25,26), via coupling elements (28-30). The selector control operates in two orthogonal directions, with the control movements transmitted by two separate drive systems (74,75) to provide a simple gate layout which prevents the gear selection from moving inadvertently between forward and reverse. The forward gate allows the selector lever to be moved in two directions, representing an increase or decrease in the gear setting. Across the gate a second path for the gear selector provides in and out movements for the reverse gear.
