A press monitoring system (C) includes a linear variable displacement transducer (B) mounted to the frame to acquire stress and strain data in the press housing (A). Top and bottom (28, 30) of a rod member (26) are secured to the press axial movement of the rod in accordance with the frame movement at that point. A linear variable displacement transducer (52) is secured at the slidably attached end of rod (30). Relative rod positioning affects a magnetic flux generated by sending current to a transducer coil (64). Press operation thereby indicates, due to stresses or strains on the press housing (A), the characteristics of a particular press operation. An analog signal representative of these press characteristics generated by flux variations is communicated to a continuous plotter (88), a digitized version of which is further communicated to a microprocessor controller (90). An alarm is generated when preselected characteristics are exceeded.
