In wall coverings with a visible layer of polyethylene and a backing layer, the visible layer is a consolidated fibre mat of continuous polyethylene. pref. high pressure polyethylene, fibres. Also claimed is a method of making the material. Pref. the visible layer has a mass/unit area of not less than 35, esp. 40-60 g/m<2>. It may be subjected to corona treatment, given an antistatic finish and printed and/or embossed. The backing is based on cellulose fibres and esp. is paper or laminated paper.
