A method and an apparatus for cleaning a disk by rendering the disk to abrasively contact with a cleaner. The method has the steps of: reproducing(S1~S6) a recorded data by actuating a spindle motor(7) and an optical pickup unit(9); compensating errors(S7~S9) while the reproducing being done; detecting dirty errors(S10~S13) and displaying an indication if the dirty errors are detected; cleaning(S14,S15) the CD(14) by forcibly contacting the cleaner(17) thereto while the spindle motor(7) being operated; ending and withdrawing(S16) the CD(14) when a manual cleaning is required. The dirty error is solved automatically by the self-cleaning in which the tray loading motor, the cam, and the cleaner are operated.
