An optical device comprising a substrate, at least one first groove formed in the substrate, an optical fiber disposed in the first groove, at least one second groove obliquely crossing the optical fiber, and an optical member placed in the second groove and having a surface which reflects or diffracts at least part of light propagating through the optical fiber. A photodetector element is disposed at a position at which to receive light reflected or diffracted by the optical member. Accordingly, an inexpensive optical device having a small size, low loss and high reliability is provided.
