To prepare sliver material from a carding machine (1), for spinning high grade yarns, the yarns are drawn in the carding direction, under control. The drawing control sets the delivery speed of the drawing unit (14), for the sliver material to be laid in a can (151) by a rotating guide (15), in set sliver lengths. The cans are assembled into groups (151'), each for a comber head of the comber (4), and the can groups (151') are moved to the combing station (4). The sliver ends are presented to the combing machine (4) take-in rollers, and the sliver is drawn out of the cans and combed. Pref. the leading end of the sliver is secured to the base of the sliver can and, when the can is full, it is closed by a cover. For further processing, the sliver end is drawn out at the side of the can, near the base. The can be filled from below and, when full, that side is closed. A plate cover is inserted which, under gravity, compresses the wound sliver within the can. The cover has a suction opening for the leading end of the sliver, connected to a controlled suction line.
