A brake adjuster mechanism has a housing 2 containing an adjuster shaft 1, and a plug 5 having a recess 3A engaged with an end portion 3 of the shaft. A spanner is applied to the plug to re-wind the adjuster shaft to facilitate servicing of the brake. When the torque applied to the shaft reaches a predetermined value, the material of the plug deforms to permit the spanner applied thereto to slip relative to the plug. In the embodiment of figure 5, for a re-wind operation, the plug is displaced against bias of spring 23 to permit splines 26 to engage splines 15 on the shaft. When the predetermined torque value is reached, the plug deforms to permit the splines 26 to slip over splines 15.
