To produce a metal appliance unit for a domestic kitchen, and especially a washing or cooking trough with a coloured surface layer, the outer surface has an alloy or ceramic cladding layer applied by a thermal spray process. The surface is prepared by sand or steel blasting before coating and covered by an adhesive layer. The cladding can be a varnish layer containing PTFE. The body of the unit is of steel alloy, and especially fine steel, or a low alloy carbon steel and especially fine plate.
