In the embodiments of Fig. 1A and B and Fig. 2A and B, a catalytic reactor vessel comprises a normally vertically disposed cylindrical shell 14, a cylindrical container 16 positioned to define an annular space 18 between it and the shell 14, a reaction zone within the basket including perforated upper catalyst supports 36 (Fig. 1A -and B) and a lower catalyst support 48, inlet means 52 in the shell for passing reactant material into the annulus 18, a generally vertical core member 20 having one end (upper in Fig. 1A, lower in Fig. 2B) in flow communication with said annulus and indirect heat exchange means 22 positioned within said core member for transferring heat between reactant material from the annulus with reacted material from the reaction zone, and outlet means 32 in said vessel for withdrawal from the reactor vessel of reacted material from one end of said heat exchanger means, the other end of the core member (lower in Fig. 1A, upper in Fig. 2A) being in flow communication with the upper end of the reaction zone so as to supply reactant material thereto and there being conduit means 34 providing flow communication between the lower end of the reaction zone and the reacted material side of the heat exchange means. Quench pipes 60 may be provided. |
