PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and rapidly form gradient structures on a surface part by specifying the heating up rate and pressure and the inside surface temp. of molds in the initial period of sintering start at the time of producing a functionally gradient material by electrical hot press sintering. SOLUTION: Fox example, stainless steel powder and titanium carbonitride are mixed by a wet process in an org. solvent to prepare a aterial A. The material is put into the molds 7, 6, 9 of which the inside surfaces are segmented by graphite. A partial liquid phase state is than applied to the material A while the material is kept energized, by which the material is subjected to the electrical hot press sintering. The functionally gradient material formed with the nonuiform structure layer, which is the mixing ratio of the material A at a thickness ofι0.1mm on the surface part of the sintered material, is produced. At this time, the conditions of the electrical hot press sintering are set at the heating up rate of 60 to 100 deg.C/min, a pressure of 100 to 1000kbf/cm<2> and the inside surface temp. 1050 to 1500 deg.C of the molds 7, 6, 9 in the initial period of sintering start. As a result, the functionally gradient material with which various kinds of mechanical parts having the required wear resistance and corrosion resistance are stably obtainable is produced.
