PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a soft furnace carbon black which, when compounded into a rubber, can give a rubber compsn. having tensile strength and fatigue resistance effectively improved while retaining hardness and elastic modulus as low as those of a rubber compsn. contg. a conventional thermal black and to obtain a rubber compsn. contg. the same. SOLUTION: This carbon black has an iodine adsorption (IA) of 20-30mg/g, a dibutyl phthalate absorption(DBPA) of 25-35ml/100g, a ratio of nitrogen- adsorption specific surface area (N2 SA) to IA of 0.85-1.10, and a▵Dst/Dst of carbon black aggregates in the centrifugal settling method of 0.96-1.02. Here Dst is the modal valve (nm) of the Stokes diameter of carbon black aggregates obtd. by the centrifugal settling method; and▵Dst is the difference between two Stokes diameters corresponding to one half of the frequency of Dst.
