A coaxial electrosurgical instrument has an elongate inner electrode (702) insulated from and contained coaxially within a hollow tubular elongate outer electrode (706). A controlled, high-frequency, potential difference is provided between the electrodes under the user's control when the uninsulated distal end portions thereof are simultaneously contacted to tissue. Tissue is readily and cleanly cut between the inner and outer electrodes by the current which flows by applying a controlled, continuous, undamped high frequency voltage difference between the electrodes. Cauterization and coagulation may be performed by a periodically damped frequency electrical potential difference. The outer electrode is preferably formed to have an inclined end surface (716), and the cooperating inner electrode is advantageously formed with a distal end part (726) inclined to the common axis of the electrodes and ending in a smoothly rounded bulbous end (1250) for contacting tissue to perform the surgical operations. The bulbous rounded end of the inner electrode extends forwardly of the outer electrode and also extends radially outwardly thereof and enables a gentle hooking force to be applied to hold tissue between the two electrodes to enable precise surgical operations thereon. |
