PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To retrieve a subtitle and reproduce the subtitle at a variable speed by encoding the subtitle so that it is registered in subtitle stream data. SOLUTION: Subtitle buffering 68 uses sector information from a sectorizing part 100 in a data encoding device to generate TOC including the start sector address and end sector address of the subtitle and display time data for special reproduction of the subtitle. On a reception side, the TOC is read out and referenced to retrieve the subtitle and the display time data is referenced to reproduce the subtitle at a variable speed.
