PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a steel wire for reinforcing rubber, having excellent mechanical properties, such as strength and tensile strength, even if patenting treatment is completely omitted in the course of a manufacturing process. SOLUTION: A wire bar of a steel, having a composition containing 0.35-0.9% C, 0.1-0.4% Si, 0.2-1.1% Mn, <=0.04% (including 0%) P, and <=0.04% (including 0%) S, is hot-rolled and then cooled, by which the pro-eutectoid ferrite of the resultant wire rod is regulated to <=20% (including 0%) by area ratio. By this method, wiredrawing is performed without performing patenting treatment, and the steel wire for reinforcing rubber, having tensile strength satisfying inequality TS(N/mm<2> )<=2400-1650×log10 D [where TS and D represent tensile strength and the final wire diameter (mm) of the steel wire, respectively], can be obtained.
