[Also in Division D1] Coherence is imparted to a fibrous web by means of a process comprising directing opposed streams of fluid against opposite faces of the web and causing exhaust fluid to leave in a direction having a component at right angles to the direction of web travel. The fluid used may be steam e.g. wet, saturated, superheated, compressed air, e.g. heated or unheated, other gases, e.g. nitrogen, or water. Apparatus for carrying the process into effect comprises a pair of opposed jet devices 12, 12a, spaced apart to allow passage of a fibrous web 10 therebetween, the opposed faces of the devices are parallel; a plenum chamber is arranged with each device and exit channels 15, 15a are provided connecting the plenum chamber to the face of the device, parallel grooves 14, 14a, are also provided in the face of each device for directing exhaust fluid along paths at right angles to the direction of web travel, the exit channels being located in the grooves. Several arrangements of grooves and exit holes are shown. The fibrous web may comprise one or more layers of yarn or tow and webs of staple fibres or filaments. The fibres may be natural or synthetic e.g. polyethylene terephthalate. The apparatus may be used for joining yarns end-to-end. |
