[Also in Division B7] A pad towards the end of an aircraft runway to prevent an aircraft overrunning the runway comprises a series of elements 14, 16 which yield plastically or destructively when the aircraft undercarriage rolls over them. The elements 14, 16 are mounted on a firm base 11 and may have a flexible skin 10 on top. The yieldable elements may take the form of vertical webs (12), Fig. 2 (not shown), cylinders 14, a honeycomb construction (15), Fig. 5 (not shown), inclined cantilevers 16, or collapsible domes (17), Fig. 7 (not shown). The pad is preferably rigid enough not to yield when loads lighter than an aircraft pass over it.</p> |
