PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make display light visible with sufficient luminance and to make a liquid crystal element hardly visible in spite of incidence of external light by constituting the above device of a light source, a transparent cover for protecting the liquid crystal element and a black color polarizing member which is disposed at this transparent cover and has the axis of polarization approximately aligned to the axis of polarization of a polarizing member. SOLUTION: The light source 3 is provided with a diffusion plate 8 and approximately uniformly illuminates the liquid crystal element 2. The transparent cover 9 is disposed on the front side of the liquid crystal element 2 to protect the liquid crystal element 2 and to prevent the adhesion of dust on the surface of the liquid crystal element 2. The thin-film sheet-like black color polarizing plate 10 which is the black color polarizing member is stuck to the front side of the transparent cover 9. The black color polarizing plate 10 has low transmittance and its transmittance to natural light (the light vibrating in all directions) is 20%. As a result, the liquid crystal element 2 behind the transparent cover 9 is hardly visible in spite of the incidence of the external light and the efficient transmission of the display light of the liquid crystal element 2 is made possible. |
