In a retrieval system (1) for the automatic retrieval of articles (2) and their preparation for despatch, having two parallel magazine rows (3, 4), slightly inclined relative to the vertical, in which the articles are stacked, and having ejectors (13) for ejecting the lowermost article in the stack transversely to the extent of the stack onto a conveyor belt (5) extending substantially horizontally between the magazine rows (3, 4), it is proposed not only to provide a conveyor belt running between the magazine rows but also to assign to each magazine row, on the outer longitudinal side of the magazine, at least one additional conveyor belt extending substantially horizontally, reversible ejectors being provided which can eject not only in one direction onto a conveyor belt running past in the centre but also, in case of need, both onto the inner and onto the outer conveyor belt. As a result, the retrieval performance can be approximately doubled.
