1,128,326. Expanded polystyrene articles. FOLEY PACKAGING & INSULATION Ltd. 18 Nov., 1965 [19 Nov., 1964], No. 47204/64. Heading B5A. Expanded polystyrene articles are produced by partially filling a mould with partially preexpanded beads, inserting a plurality of probes into the mould in one step, and passing steam into the mould through holes in the probes spaced at different locations from the mould face. The probes are preferably withdrawn from the mould cavity while the beads are still expanding. Apparatus, Fig. 7, preferably comprises a two-part mould 2,6 which parts may be clamped together, having an inlet (10, Fig. 6, not shown) for pre-expanded beads, a series of probes 20 each having a plurality of radial apertures 26 along their length, at least one manifold 12 for supplying steam to the probes and holes in the mould-parts to receive the probes. The mould may also have a plurality of lugs 17 of a length to enable complete withdrawal of the probes from the mould cavity without any being removed from the mould part. The probes are preferably plugged at their ends 24. Vents 32 are preferably provided in the upper mould part. Where the product has a high end wall (3, Fig. 3, not shown) both mould parts may have holes to receive two independent series of probes (20, 22). |
