A process for the treatment of manure, sludge, waste material and related prods. comprises wet oxidn. at 20-1500 deg C and a pressure of 30-1000 bar. Also claimed is an appts. for carrying out the process. Pref. treatment system comprises (1) a compressor in which atmospheric air is compressed to form a gas mixt. at a temp. of 30-1000 bar and a temp. of 20-1500 deg C, (2) a mixing zone comprising one or more venturis through which the compressed gas stream is fed and into which the material to be treated is metered; (3) a metering unit such as a screw feed by which the material to be treated is fed into the mixing zone; (4) a wet combustion reactor, where wet combustion of the material takes place over a residence period e.g. of 3 mins to several days and (5) an energy recovery part where heat generated by the exothermic combustion is recovered and e.g. converted into electricity (e.g. in a steam turbine) which is used to drive the compressor and material feed units and (6) a post treatment unit where a condensate is obtd. rich in phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium and thus useful as a fertiliser.
