The walkway is between the embankment and a supports on a line of piles, parallel to the embankment. The upper surface of the walkway is covered with a non-slip coating. If the level of the waterway increases to possible flood levels, the walkway is hinged upwards to form a flood barrier. The inner end of the walkway has a curved underside with ridges which act as location devices and as a seal against water ingress. The inner end pivots in a groove sunk into the embankment.
