PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst for effectively converting an aromatic hydrocar bon compound into toluene or the like by allowing the catalyst to carry a metal, etc., selected out of the VIII group metals and the VIA group metals of the periodical table on a carrier containing zeolite having a maximum pore diameter and SiO2 /Al2 O3 ratio specified, respectively. SOLUTION: A catalyst suitable for converting raw material oil containing benzene of boiling point of 30-210 deg.C into toluene and an 8C armatic hydrocarbon compound is prepared by depositing a metal, etc., selected out of the VIII group metals and the VI group metals of the periodical table on a carrier containing zeolite having a maximum micropore diameter of 0.6-1.0mm and SiO2 /Al2 O3 ratio of 50 or more. The raw material oil is fed from a duct 1 into a reactor 3, and produced oil is transferred to a distillation column 4 and treated therein to provide a gas content from a duct 7, a fraction containing benzene, a part of which is recycled, from a duct 8, a fraction to be desired to contain toluene and an 8C aromatic hydrocabon compound from a duct 9 and a fraction containing an aromatic hydrocarbon compound of 9C or more, a part of which is recycled, from a duct 10. |
