PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new anthracycline antibiotic (salt) having carcinostatic activity by treating an antibiotic-nonproductive mutant of an aclacinomycin- producing bacterium such as Streptomyces galilaeus with an aglycon. SOLUTION: A new anthracycline antibiotic (salt) expressed by the formula (R1 is a methoxycarbonyl or hydroxyl; R2 is H or hydroxyl) having growth prohibiting activity against a cultured leukemic cell L1210 and useful as a carcinostatic agent. The new anthracycline antibiotic is obtained by treating an antibiotic-nonproductive mutant, Streptomyces galilaeus, the strain MA144-M 1.KE303 (FERM P-4808) isolated from Streptomyces galilaeus, the strain MA144-M1 (FERM P-2455), which is known to produce aclacinomycin A of an anthracycline antibiotic, with an aglicon (e.g. aklavinone). |
