PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively prevent the thermal deterioration of catalytically active seeds without deteriorating the HC adsorbing function of an HC adsorbent layer. SOLUTION: An HC adsorbent layer 3 is carried on a catalyst carrier made of a monolithic carrier 1, cerium oxide 4 and neodymium oxide 5 are simultaneously carried on the HC adsorbent layer 3 and catalytically active seeds 6 made of a noble metal or its oxide are further carried on the oxides 4, 5 to obtain the objective catalyst for purification of exhaust gas disposed in the exhaust system of an engine.
