PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an alkali metal hxatitanate double compound powder which is useful as a friction material such as automobile brake friction pad, reinforcing material of a resin, filler of a coating material, or the like. SOLUTION: This powder consists of spherical particles (having e.g. a 40μm average particle size) in which fine crystal grains of both an alkali metal hexatitanate (M2 Ti6 O13 wherein M is an alkali metal) and titania coexist and these two kinds of fine crystal grains are joined together. In this production, a fine powdery mixture obtained by mixing a powdery titanium compound and a powdery alkali metal compound in a ratio enough to meet the relational expression TiO2 /M2 O>6 (wherein M is an alkali metal such as K, Na, Li, Rb, or the like) is granulated into granules and then, the granules are subjected to calcination treatment at about 700 to 1,300 deg.C and thereafter, to crushing/ grinding treatment (using a vibrating sieve) to produce the objective powder. The particle size of spherical particles of this powder is e.g. <=100μm and arbitrarily controlled by adjusting the granule size of granules of the raw material powdery mixture.
