PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a beautiful color image which is bright and wide in visual field angle and has small variation of display colors due to temperature variation without using a color filter. SOLUTION: The color image is displayed by making good use of the birefringence of both 1st and 2nd biaxial phase difference plates 12 and 13 which are arranged between a liquid crystal cell 1 of 110 deg.-130 deg.C in the twist angle of liquid crystal molecules and a couple of polarizing plates 10 and 11 to eliminate the need for a color filter, a bright display can be made, and a back light device is unnecessary, thereby reducing the power consumption. Further, the phase difference between light which is transmitted vertically through the liquid crystal cell 1 and light which is transmitted obliquely is compensated by the phase difference plates 12 and 13 to widen the visual field angle. Further, display colors are obtained by not only the birefringence of the liquid crystal cell 11, but also the birefringence of the phase difference plates 12 and 13, so the influence of temperature variation is small and the variation of the display colors is reducible. |
