The insulator disc has a crown (2) and a skirt extending radially outward from the bottom of the crown. The crown and skirt are made of glass or a similar insulating material. A metal cap is placed over the crown to join the disc to an adjacent insulator disc. A cement is used to fix the cap in place. The crown is shaped to extend the surface areas of crown and cap in contact with the cement, and the crown has projecting ridges (8) to ensure a tight fit for the metal cap. The top of the crown is rounded to allow the cap to be easily located. The raised ridges (8) are then formed round the periphery of the crown.
