Reduction and melting are controlled in a pig iron producing blast furnace by continuously analysing the composition of the top gas issuing from the furnace, preferably to determine the average percentage contents of CO, CO2, H2 and N2, and determining the composition and temperature of the blast blown in from the nozzles and optionally the composition of the charge to continuously calculate from these measurements, e.g. by means of an analytic digital computer, a value Wu of the energy released by the gas rising in the furnace less than expended in regenerating CO by the endo-thermic reaction CO2 + C = 2CO, correlating this value with the chemical composition, particularly the Si content, of the melt produced for a period preceding a chosen work cycle so as to reduce a regulating value Wr for the energy Wu valid for the work cycle period, and adjusting the composition and/or temperature of the blast in accordance with the value Wr. The composition of the blast is conveniently determined from its humidity. |
