996,842. Refractory blocks for furnaces. CULLINAN REFRACTORIES Ltd. Oct. 7, 1963 [Oct. 12, 1962], No. 39437/63. Heading F4B. Refractory blocks for lining furnaces or converters are made in sets fitting snugly together to form a ring by spacing preformed blocks in the ring, and moulding further blocks in the spaces. Blocks 36 are moulded round a core 10 by means of shuttering 32, the end shutters 34 having projections 50 so that keying grooves are formed on the blocks 36. The core 10 has a central pillar 12 carrying vibrators 28 on a cantilever 14. Alternate blocks 36 are cast using outer shutters 32 and end shutters 34, the outer shutters 32 are moved to the spaces between the blocks 36 when these are set, and further blocks are cast. Hangers 48 are embedded in the blocks and liners may be used between the blocks so that they are readily separable. Several courses of blocks may be moulded outside the furnace, previously moulded blocks forming the base of the mould for the blocks of the upper courses. The tapered ends of rotary converters may be formed of sets of blocks leaving a tapered central space. |
