PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording disk which is suitable for high-density recording and has both of excellent travelling durability and improved reproducing output, and to provide a magnetic recording and reproducing method using this disk. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording disk has a magnetic layer of >=1μm thickness on at least one surface of a nonmagnetic flexible supporting body, and the magnetic layer contains a hexagonal ferrite powder dispersed in a binder. The magnetic layer also contains a carbon black and the amt. of the carbon black present from the surface of the magnetic layer to the 1/2 depth of the magnetic layer is larger than the amt. of the carbon black present from the 1/2 depth of the layer to the supporting body side. The max. magnetic flux density of the magnetic layer is >=1500G and the coercive force is 1000-3000 Oe. By using this magnetic recording disk, digital signals with <=1.5μm shortest recording wavelength are recorded and reproduced in the magnetic layer of the disk. In this disk, a nonmagnetic layer is formed between the nonmagnetic flexible supporting body and the magnetic layer.
